Framing Recommendations
Prints can either be floated or matted:
I usually prefer to float prints if they have deckled or torn edges. I also recommend floating prints where they image size is the same as the paper (see the first photo below). Just make sure to put in spacers between the clear acrylic/glass glazing and the mat that the print is floated on, so that the image surface does not touch the glazing. I have a writeup on how to float frames here.
Otherwise matting is also a common option. Make the opening large enough so that you can see the edition, title, and signature at the bottom and also leave margins to the top, left, and right of the image (the margin for the top/left/right are usually equal in size and can be smaller than then the bottom margin).
The first two photos below are floated prints. The third one is a matted print. Most of my product photos show floated prints. :)
Floated print (Image & paper size: 11" x 14") in a 16”x20” frame
Floated print (Image size: 5"x7", Paper size: 6.5"x9") in an 8”x10” frame
Matted print (Image size: 5"x7", Paper size: 6.5"x9") in an 8”x10” frame
Photos are usually matted:
When matting photos, the opening should be about 1/8” inward from the image edge (i.e. 1/4” smaller than image height and width of the image). Below are a few photos of different sized photos in different sized frames. I usually prefer to frame my photos so that they have some breathing and are not too close to the frame, such as the first two below.
Matted photo (Image size: 7" x 10", Paper size: 11" x 14") in a 16”x20” frame
Matted photo (Image size: 6.5" x 6.5", Paper size: 8" x 10") in a 11”x14” frame
Matted photo (Image size: 6" x 6", Paper size: 8" x 10") in an 8”x10” frame
